This is a review of Noodler's Heart of Darkness a black ink
Here on the channel there is a new ink review posted weekly. I get inks test them and share the results with you, so you know before you buy. General thoughts on the ink are given. Two chromatogaphies are done, one done correctly and one after the ink has dried for 10 min. A resistance test is done on Rhodia paper and is tested for how it performs when you highlight the writing, water, pen flush and 1/3 bleach solution are also tested.

It is important with this and all reviews to remember I am not an expert. I am just a nerd with a camera and an opinion. I expect my opinion to mostly be wrong as it is just my solitary opinion, make your own judgement and don’t follow group think. There always seems to be some variation of an ink, pen or paper. These are things out of my control and I can only give my opinion on what I have in-front of me. If your opinions are different I encourage you to share them in the comments but please rememberI am an amateur just having fun…. Also, me and everyone else you interact with on the internet is an actual human on the other end of the computer, they might be having a bad day and your kind words might be the best thing that happens to them that day. I am in shock if you have actually read this much of the description, if you have comment and let me know you found this.

    Very good review but there 2 things not mentionned (or did I miss em ) time to dry AND how does the pen behave after a few days/week with the ink in the pen... In my limited experience with this pen you have to use a "perfectly" sealing cap.

    There seems to be a lot of confusion around the difference between HOD and Noodler's black. So here is a quote from Nathan Tardiff when asked what the difference is: "Penetration rate...standard black (as shown in the above video) keeps the border of the line tightly defined...anti-feather black even more so. Heart of Darkness goes deeper and slightly wider into the peaks and valleys of the paper fiber mountain range and also has a slightly faster "dry time" due to this tendency. The base materials for manufacturing the two are also different...and I tend to name a different ink if the process/chemistry/components vary in one way or another." I have a large bottle of HOD and it is a go-to for me for writing and drawing.

    Yes! I got HoD as a random sample. Every pen I tried it in loved it. And I loved the look of it. I got the big bottle and chose one pen to keep permanently inked with it.

    HOD is a personal favorite black. Who needs shading, sheen or glitter in a black ink?😁 And it's definitely BLACK. Not always happy with Noodler's inks, but this ticks all the right boxes for me. Permanent. BLACK. (Have I mentioned that?😂) Generally well behaved across a range of papers. I also have and use Platinum Carbon Black, with similar success, but HOD is cheaper, which pleases this old cheapskate, so Carbon Black is only for my Platinum pocket pen which takes only cartridges. Great review!

    How does Heart if Darkness compare to the regular Noodlers Black ?

    • @doc_sav
      @doc_sav 3 години тому

      I asked the guy who makes all the Noodler's ink what the difference between these 2 are. He told me the colors should be exactly the same, and the only difference is absorption rate. Unfortunately, he didn't specify HOW the absorption rate differs, but from my experience, HoD absorbs more into paper. In practice, to my eye this tends to make it appear a bit darker most of the time compared to Noodler's regular black. To my eye, especially when using very thin nib, the regular black has a warm grey tone, and HOD tends to appear slightly more neutral and true to black, while retaining the warm tone. The difference in tone between regular / HOD and Noodler's Borealis Black (which is has a more blue / cool tone) is fairly significant. Sometimes, on porous paper with larger nibs, I get some feathering, but thumbing through a few of my sketchbooks this morning I'd say it is minimal. I have one of the large bottles of HOD, and while I always love to try many different inks, HOD is kind of my go-to standard and I have used it extensively both for writing, drawing, and even a little bit of painting, both paper and miniatures. I also mix it with water in a brush pen for shading. It looks really nice in that application, though the brush pen seems to get clogged every so often. I can't really attribute that to HOD, since the other brush pen I use with different ink has flow issues every so often as well.

      OK, I found another comment reply he made that specifically explains the difference: Q: what is the difference between heart of darkness and standard black? A: "Penetration rate...standard black (as shown in the above video) keeps the border of the line tightly defined...anti-feather black even more so. Heart of Darkness goes deeper and slightly wider into the peaks and valleys of the paper fiber mountain range and also has a slightly faster "dry time" due to this tendency. After watching all six of your videos on ink mixing while discussing topics about something else, I find them to be interesting. However, some colours aren’t really that accurate and so experimenting them is the key part of it. On occasion, I tend to mix inks I have in my collection to get a unique colour I like, but it’s not something I do all the time. - When I watched you expel ink with a syringe, it was quite messy and to me, that’s not how I use that method. What I use instead is some cotton buds (also known as Q-tips) and dip the mixed ink colour from that sample vial and use a swatch card or high-quality card stock to apply that swatch. - I have a limited collection of inks at the moment and have no interest in doing ink mixing, at least for the foreseeable future, but nevertheless it’s still interesting to take a look at.

    • @AnInkGuy
      @AnInkGuy 2 дні тому

      I don't tend to mix inks, myself. This was just a little side project. Using the syringe was very messy. It isn't how I usually do my swatches. It was a failed 'artistic' choice just for these videos.

    I grew up surrounded by teachers. My grandmother was a kindergarten teacher from the 1940s (possibly earlier. Just know 1940s) until 1973. One that adults in the little town she taught in spoke highly of her years after she died. My mom was an early elementary teacher. Had her license, but by the time I was in school, she'd taught in Christian schools, up until my younger sister graduated (retirement age in the real world.) My dad was a science and math professor in Washtenaw County, Michigan (on top of being the electronics engineer at the U of M Phoenix Project.) Might think one of us kids would have become a teacher. 😁 Frankly, wish I'd done this... Historically, the United States has had an awful education system. Even early on, our French allies during the War of 1812 talked about how illiterate US citizens were. My late brother-in-law was certain everything was better when he was little, in the 1950s. But, I see issues even then. Much is ultimately indoctrination. I'll use history for a "for instance." It's just dates, places and names. Whys and the cycles of history tend to be ignored, as they're harder to test. ("But they DO teach the whys!" Not really. They have been colored by current beliefs forever. Many archeologists are bemoaning how the historical record gets colored by current trendy views constantly.) I, outside of my Dad and grandmother, (probably because of the Christian school she taught at, I can't include my mother. And it's not because it was a Christian school. Was the curriculum and format used.) I can count 3 teachers that did more than just indoctrinate. (And there's defense for some indoctrination. Some things are just remembered by repetition. 😁) Those 3 I credit with teaching me to think. Being able to think independently is the keystone for education, IMO. Drawing on my Christian school background: there's a concept that many Christians also ignore, in my experience. The "Berean Method." Christians in Berea studied the Scriptures DAILY to see if what they're being told is true. Not trying to disprove. But, to study the sources. Not saying that only Christians are right. I've come across plenty that don't know what they're saying. 😂 It's the study for yourself. My dad used to have a massive library on many subjects. And not just sources that agreed with common thought. I grew up rooting through this, and it is why I strongly disagree with certain members of my family, who are taught "because Bro Figgeshnobbe says so, it's scripture." The one teacher gave me the love of the English language I have had for years. My dad gave me critical thinking. And even a professor I don't agree with in general taught me to dig through the sources and form your ideas from that. I worked with juvenile delinquents for years. There's no real consequence for truancy. It's only if they have "must remain in school" court ordered that truancy can have consequences. Had several "repeat customers" for skipping school after it became court ordered. The system can tie teachers' hands. They can force teaching drivel like "History vs. Hollywood." Basically just watching movies for a blanket B course. Tenure can be a blessing and a curse. Can really defend a great teacher who speaks up. Can also shelter an awful teacher. My ex's 5th grade teacher was tenured, which allowed her to be verbally abusive. And sheltered her when she refused to go along with several students' diagnosis of dyslexia, instead calling them "stupid" and "retarded" and "not trying." Kept it up until she retired around 20 years after my ex had her as a teacher. Know a gentleman who was an officer in the Guatemalan Army. Came to the US to protect his family (they're ethnic Maya.) After the school day, he tutored his kids, because, in his words, "United States schools are not teaching." Sure, that's a generalization. There's teachers, like some of mine, that are wonderful. There's great schools. I've sung the praises of a local elementary school for years, now. Sadly, they'll go on to the actually poor education high school in my town... Some instances of higher education are great. I agree that things seem to be going downhill, but it's incentive to try to improve what you can. (Will also say that the free public education can be part of the problem. Kids from Third World countries that have a harder time getting an education seem to value it much more than American students generally have done. )

    • @AnInkGuy
      @AnInkGuy 2 дні тому

      There is just so much to agree with here. I do think things will make a 'WILD' swing back, I just don't know when. I always treat it as I can only do the best I can for the students in front of me. A sort of lucky for me is being a mathematician... most people don't have the skill in my area to teach the material in any in-depth way. So, a little security there. As a personal side of what I do, I often mix the philosophy lessons that are in close alignment with the maths lesson of the day while trying to get them to understand maths isn't solving an arithmetic problem but a method of thinking to solve any problem.

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 День тому

      @AnInkGuy Like I mentioned, history is cyclic. Things do swing around. And around...😁 Like I said, there are some really good teachers, no matter what system they work for. ACE (Accelerated Christian Education), or, as it's called today, School of Tomorrow is all about indoctrination. Memorization by rote. Should know, went through it from kindergarten through 12th grade... But 2 of my teachers (though, more that I think about it, 3) were instrumental in helping me think for myself, not just parroting by rote. The history teacher at the juvenile detention facility I'd worked at was one I'd have loved as a teacher. Because they had more flexibility than regular school (was through our local intermediate school district, so "special ed,") he taught so that the kids would have to think on top of the basic names, dates and places. It's always encouraging to come across those types of people. 😁 Good on you for including philosophy with mathematics!

    i don't know and understand why shading is so highly rated. in my opinion shading inks really distract and do irritate me while reading. Even when i write it irritates me, how contrasts make up within the drawnline ... maybe it is a thing i have to get used to, but my first reaction to every shading ink is "i really dislike it" ...

      If you don't like shading, that is perfectly fine, and it isn't something you 'need to get used to.' It just means you need to find the pen and ink combinations that give you the experience you want, no shading.

I believe they are "sample vial 20 x 46mm IC sample tube w/E-Z Pierce Cap" this is an easy amazon or google search term. I would avoid the 'clear' cap as they don't seem to work as well, but instead get come color cap.

    Older video but wanted to say thank you. This is an ink that has been jumping off the page at me when looking online, and I was tempted to grab a bottle, but decided to see if you had a video on it first. Glad I did. I'm just journaling on mostly Muji paper, but I have naturally very small handwriting. Where you are getting around 4-6 words per line on a steno pad, in my normal writing I get 9-12 words per line. Most fine nibs are too broad for me. I would never get to see the beautiful sheen that this ink is capable of.

      DO NOT contact anyone on telegram (or any other social media) claiming to be me. I am not running giveaways and I will not ask you for money. They are scammers and spammers, and they want to steal your money and personal information.

    Thanks for educating us. I do not think of these videos as commercials. Some creators it’s plain that’s what they are.

      The video being commercials was a realization I came to much later.

    I’m not a video maker (except at work occasionally) but I found this exposé fascinating.

    Have you flown with it? Non-ferrous metals except for nib probably not setting off metal detectors, right? Brass too bullet looking for TSA (I’d hate to have it confiscated.)? Enjoyed your video. Thanks.
